The video above, showed how to detect leaks, but the leak may be caused by factors outside of what we normally think of – sure you may have a leaky faucet – that’s easy to determine.  But let’s check other factors.

  • Check under your sinks. Our family loves to store all sorts of cleaning agents, paper towels, and things that make “junk drawers” jealous.  Frequently, I’ve had to move things away from both the drain pipes and the water supply lines and valves.  All we need to do is knock one of the valves, and a little leak can occur, ruining your day, or the floor of your cabinet.
  • Foundation issues? Our soil is known to shift, causing foundation issues and costly repairs.  Did you know that shifting soil and the new pressure caused by your foundation can crack a pipe?  If you can’t find the cause of your leak, either in the supply line entering the home, or any device that uses water in the home, then the not-so-good news is the leak is coming from a pipe under your home.  Before it gets to this point, it’s suggested you get an annual inspection from either a structural engineer or foundation repair company.  Many repair companies offer free inspections.  Or, try the golf ball test.  Drop the ball from a few inches above your floor, and see if it rolls in any direction, or stays put.  If it rolls, yep – time to get someone to inspect your foundation.
